Curation, Conservation and the Ceramic Object

The Harvard Museums and the Harvard Ceramics Program have been close collaborators in support of scholarly research of ceramic objects for many years. This course offers participants the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of historic ceramic objects from across the globe. Teams of conservators, curators, conservation scientists and/or scholars from the museums of Harvard will discuss their research of ceramic objects within the collection. Each class meeting will feature a different topic. Each session will feature six different presenters.

Friday, September 11th: Islamic Sweetmeats Dish (shown above) with curators and conservators from the Harvard Art Museums - Mary McWilliams, Norma Jean Calderwood Curator of Islamic and Later Indian Art, Tony Sigel, Senior Conservator of Objects and Sculpture , Katherine Eremin, Patricia Cornwell Senior Conservation Scientist.

Friday, September 18th: Greek Terra Cotta Figurines with Frances Gallart Marques, former Frederick Randolph Grace Curatorial Fellow in Ancient Art and Susan Costello, Associate Conservator of Objects and Sculpture at the Harvard Art Museum.

Friday, September 25th: Technology and the Museum Experience: Highlights from the Harvard Museum of Ancient Near East with Joseph A. Green, Deputy Director and Curator of the Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East, Assistant Curator of Collections Adam J. Aja and Museum Coordinator Adam Middleton.

Friday, October 2nd:  Greek Vases with Susanne Ebbinghaus, Head, Division of Asian and Mediterranean Art, and George M.A. Hanfmann Curator of Ancient Art, Tony Sigel, Senior Conservator of Objects and Sculpture and Susan Costello, Associate Conservator of Objects and Sculpture at the Harvard Art Museums.

Friday, October 9th: Egyptian Faience - Rebuilding the Throne of Queen Hetepheres with Rus Gant, Director of the Harvard Visualization Laboratory and the Harvard Museum of the Ancient Near East.

With your registration, you will receive access to a Harvard Google Classroom which will feature recordings of each class. In the case you miss a class or would like to review, these recordings will be available for 30 days after the end of the course.

Cost: Free for Harvard College Undergraduate Students, $300 for Harvard Graduate Students and Adult Community*. $40 for TAP Eligible Harvard Employees.
