Harvard Business School—Online

HBS's iconic Baker Library is the largest business library in the world—and its collection expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic. For the first time in its 95-year history, Baker brought in non-business books, over 170 titles (to date) organized by Cathy Chukwulebe (MBA 2021) as part of her new non-profit, Little Black Library (LBL).

In response to the racial and social unrest of 2020, Cathy launched Little Black Library to promote Black authors and conversations about the Black experience through books and events at libraries and other partners around the U.S.

When Mallory Stark, research librarian at Baker Library, learned about the LBL, she and her team immediately saw it as a way to build uponprevious, more traditional library diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. "We wanted something that was more connective and interactive. Little Black Library was perfect," said Stark. "We’re supporting a student-led initiative. It gives our students agency over this topic."

On the list is A Blessing: Women of Color Teaming Up to Lead, Empower and Thrive, by HBS alumnae Bonita C. Stewart (MBA 1983) and Jacqueline Adams (MBA 1978). Described as "fresh, bold and fierce," A Blessing is a mission-driven, realistic analysis of Black female leadership, based on proprietary data about four races and four generations of American "desk workers."

To mark this HBS and Black History Month collaboration, Senior Lecturer Henry McGee will lead a fireside chat with Stewart and Adams about their multi-year research on women of color in business as well as generational diversity and the need for increased manager training.
