Join a Western Ave. Arts Walk during ARTS FIRST to learn about Allston’s public art! Pieces include both permanent and temporary works of art on view at the Harvard Ed Portal and Harvard Business School, as well as works affiliated with Zone 3.
Student-guided walking tours are ongoing (departs every hour) and take one hour. Advance registration is preferred. Comfortable shoes recommended.
Each ARTS FIRST festival is unique, but every year combines the exuberance of Harvard students, faculty and affiliates who are passionate about the many art forms presented in four rousing days of performances, exhibitions and community.

Gallery 224 at the Ceramics Program, Office for the Arts at Harvard is pleased to present an exhibition of work from Montana-based potter Julia Galloway's most recent body of work, The Endangered Species Project: New England. Galloway works from each state's official list of species identified as endangered, threatened or extinct. She has created a series of covered jars, one urn for each species, illustrating the smallest Agassiz Clam Shrimp to the largest Eastern Elk.

Join the Harvard Ed Portal for a special evening celebrating Diwali, the Indian festival of lights! Diwali is said to be lit by the love that resides within each person. Dancer and Harvard Kennedy School student Neha Bansal will explore this idea with a performance of her original work A Hundred Moons, a dance in the Kathak Indian classical style. Bansal’s work uses traditional Indian symbols to tell the story of the love between two mythological characters, Radha and Krishna.

Allston-based sculptor Chloe DuBois and Providence-based painter Renée Silva depict everyday habits through recreation and abstraction. Matter of Intention focuses on materiality and pattern to explore personal tendencies. The work confronts ideas of intention and the familiar desire to compartmentalize our thoughts and environments.

Students in 6th-8th grade, join us for a fun DIY (Do It Yourself) workshop on making galaxy t-shirts! You'll learn how to make your own galaxy t-shirt, which you can take home at the end of the workshop. We'll also talk about our “guiding stars” (ie. role models) and explore what makes us shine as leaders and friends.
In this workshop, students in 3rd-5th grade will make a 3D mosaic using recycled paper and computer parts! All the parts have been chosen with children in mind and are made from plastic, rubber and metal. Through observation, imagination, and experimentation, we will learn about patterns, contrasting shapes and colors, and layering in order to make an eye-popping creation!
Join us for a reception to celebrate the latest Crossings Gallery exhibition, Space for the Unknown. Local artist Crislin Waldman’s dreamy, layered paintings explore ideas as expansive as loss and regeneration and as specific as how to represent the light and color of ice through painting. Waldman is one of the founding members of the Musa Collective, housed at 119 Braintree St. in Allston.

In partnership with Courtney Lee Weida and Dr. Carlee Bradley, join the Ed Portal for Treasures and Tales! In this interactive art workshop, 4th-5th grade students will explore themes in folk tales and fairy tales, then write and illustrate accordion books with their own magical stories. They will also learn to create symbol stone paintings and decorate gems with interesting words.

Join the Harvard Ed Portal for an afternoon of collaboration and theater as you create your own Mini Matinee! 6th-8th grade students are invited to join us for games and ensemble-building before performing your newly created work. Students of any experience level are welcome to participate in this free workshop!
