Woodturning has a long history, going back to 1300 BC Egypt. Unique in relation to most woodworking, due to its use of a lathe, woodturners turn out practical, functional pieces or “turn” to the purely aesthetic. Each craftsman brings their own personal artistic vision to the objects they create, and the pieces in maple, cherry, and other wood from far and near (look for work turned from Arnold Arboretum deaccessioned trees), offer a unique look at the “personality” within the wood itself. The three Woodturning associations, as well as Harvard Woodturning students, have come together for...

Chris Morgan's goal as a photographer is to evoke the emotions he feels when he views patterns and textures in nature, in the shapes of trees, and in the movements of birds. He brings details to life. The Arboretum, with its rich collections of flora and fauna, has been a major interest of his for over fifteen years, especially during blizzards, when dramatic photo opportunities appear. Digital photography, which offers a happy marriage of the arts and the sciences, lets him explore larger-format photography in creative ways through digital panorama techniques.

Anna Von Mertens is an exhibited artist who uses the structures of quilting and drawing to explore the frontiers of human understanding. Her new exhibition "Measure" explores the life and work of Henrietta Leavitt, one of the women “computers” hired to study glass-plate astronomical photographs at the Harvard College Observatory a century ago. Leavitt’s findings provided a unit of measurement for galactic distances. Reimagined in meticulous stitches and intricate graphite marks, Von Mertens examines our current understanding of the size and shape of...

The Arboretum's exhibition magnifies nature's productions, fully illuminating the elegance of plant life as small as a seed pod. This show captures the wonder of the Arboretum in those...
