    Olmsted and Yosemite: Civil War, Abolition, and the National Park Idea

    Just in time for the Arboretum's sesquicentennial and the bicentennial of the birth of pioneering landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, authors Rolf Diamant and Ethan Carr will speak on their recent book, "Olmsted and Yosemite: Civil War, Abolition, and the National Park Idea." They'll offer a new interpretation of how the American park—urban and national—came to figure so prominently in our cultural identity, and why this more complex and inclusive story deserves to be told.

    Witch-Hazel Walk

    Location: 

    Arnold Arboretum (Hunnewell Building), 125 Arborway, Boston

    Join a docent tour through the Arboretum looking for the vibrant colors of the witch-hazel flowers. Learn about plants native to China and Japan, those from the Ozarks and Mississippi, and even one that was introduced right here at the Arnold Arboretum!

    The walk is geared toward adults, and starts from the kiosk in front of the Hunnewell Building at 125 Arborway. This tour is limited to 15 participants. We ask that you only register if you are sure you will attend, and only register one person per form submission. Masks are required if you are unvaccinated.

    The Arboretum Experience

    Visitors are invited to experience the natural beauty of the Arnold Arboretum on an outdoor, self-guided journey that centers resilience, healing, wellness, and joy. This collaboration between the American Repertory Theater and the Arboretum features multi-genre audio plays for various ages, interactive movement maps, and pop-up performances, all set against the 281-acre backdrop of one of the jewels of Boston’s Emerald Necklace.

    Forest Bathing with Toadstool Walks

    Location: 

    Bussey Street Gate, Arnold Arboretum, Boston

    Join Tam Willey of Toadstool Walks as you slow down and awaken your senses on a guided therapeutic experience in the Arnold Arboretum. Forest bathing is inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku, a restorative sensory exploration that supports health and healing for all beings. Each walk is limited to 8 participants. Meet at the Bussey Street Gate. Participants must follow COVID guidelines including wearing a mask and practicing social distancing, as well as sign a liability and release form.

    This guided tree meditation offers an opportunity to connect and ground the self with the environment around.

    Winter Wellness Walk

    Great scenery and exercise, who could want more? Take a brisk walk this winter and stay healthy and connected to the Arboretum at a time when the landscape is pared down to its beautiful bones. This walk emphasizes fitness, with a healthy dose of information on seasonal highlights. Winter tours are geared to adults and led by trained Arboretum docents.

    After your tour, stay on for a warm drink and more conversation with your guide and staff in the Visitor Center.

    Active Aging Week: Stroll Through Time

    This "Stroll" takes you for a simple and easy route through the Arboretum's collections. At pre-determined stops, pause and hear about some of very special plants with one of our wonderful docents.     Active Aging Week: Try Tai Chi

    Note: The October 5 class will take place from 1:30pm to 2:30pm. 

    Join Harvard’s Master Yon Lee and learn about the practice of tai chi, an ancient Chinese tradition, often described as meditation in motion. Tai chi has the potential to prevent and remedy many health conditions that are associated with aging. Move through a series of gentle, fluid movements with Master Yon Lee during an hour-long session outdoors in the peaceful surroundings of the Arnold Arboretum. Beginners welcome.

    Family Hike: Play in the Snow

    Location:

    Families need nature at all times of the year! Meet inside the main gate at the Visitor Center. We will find a place to play together, making snow angels, snow humans, and more! Afterwards, families are invited to come inside the Lecture Hall to warm up with cookies and cocoa. Free and open to all, most suitable for children ages four through ten.

    Winter Wellness Walk

You will enjoy the pared down beauty of our woody plant collection and hear about the Arboretum's history and highlights.
