    Tom Hubbard Artist Lecture

    Ceramics Program Instructor Tom Hubbard is an interdisciplinary artist. His practice includes ceramics, photography, mixed media works and public art installations. Tempered by a minimalist approach, loss, history, memory, and the passage of time are threads often running through his work. Recent commissions include the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art and public art commissions for the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority and the City of Columbus, OH.

    Ceramics Program Artist In Residence and Instructor Audrey An’s creative research revolves around the notion of applying digital technologies to ceramics from the perspective of ‘convergence’, be it cultural, technological, or interdisciplinary. She earned her BFA and Art History Minor from Alfred University, MFA from Penn State University and was a post-baccalaureate student at Colorado State University.     The sculptural ceramic work of Donté K. Hayes is informed by researching traditional African heirlooms and initiation rites that speak to the greater African diaspora. Hayes uses this research along with his interest in hip-hop culture, history, and science fiction to explore themes in Afrofuturism, a projected vision of an imagined future which critiques the historical and cultural events of the African Diaspora and the distinct black experience of the Middle Passage.     Kick-Off the ArtLab: Opening Celebration

    Join the Harvard ArtLab, Harvard’s new laboratory for art and research, for an opening celebration on September 21! Allston-based tap dance company Subject: Matter will kick off the celebration with a performance beginning promptly at 10:00am accompanied by a live jazz band. Visitors can have their portrait taken by Boston-based photographer OJ Slaughter and experience the ArtLab’s sound studio and A*, the multi-channel art installation by Harvard Film Study Center Fellow Andy Graydon.

    Kogei-Kyoto Ceramic Artist Demonstrations

    The Ceramics Program, Office for the Arts at Harvard is proud to host four influential ceramic artists from the artists group, Kogei-Kyoto crafts collective of Kyoto, Japan. Two simultaneous artist demonstrations in the morning by Makimasa Imai and Takehiro Kato and two demonstrations in the afternoon by Teruko Ide and Ryozo Shibata will give registered participants the opportunity to appreciate the range of techniques used by these artists.

    Hone your surface skills and eye for design with world renowned potter Miranda Shackleton Thomas. Thomas will teach participants how to use rhythms, spaces, dividing up shapes and symbolism to help build up patterns.

    The first day of this workshop will involve Thomas demonstrating her use of slips, inlay, freehand drawing, carving, brushwork, building, and dissecting patterns.
