Join us for a two-day convening to celebrate the bold life and continuing legacy of William Monroe Trotter- a Harvard University alumnus who advanced the cause of civil rights and social justice. The convening will to introduce attendees to Trotter’s legacy and provide an opportunity for academics, activists and artists to consider how Trotter’s radical activism can address critical issues facing us today, and offer opportunities to hear from distinguished professors and practitioners.

Addressing the theme of Ukraine’s democracy in the past, present, and future, this conference is distinct from typical academic conferences. Rather than presenting papers, panelists will respond to a set of questions provided in advance by the moderator. Each panelist will discuss the same questions based on his or her expertise, followed by an open discussion with participants. Populism, global crisis, and modernity have rendered citizenship an ever-more fluid and troubled concept. This conference will explore all of these themes. In the first panel, we will debate the concept of economic citizenship, asking to what extent citizenship can be bought, constituted, or even lost by means of variation in wealth.
