Economic Opportunity and Impact Archive

Harvard University contributes significantly to the Massachusetts economy and is one of the Commonwealth's largest employers. Anchored by its Boston and Cambridge campuses, Harvard and its faculty, staff, alumni and students are a large and powerful economic force. Approximately 20,000 students are currently enrolled at Harvard and 49,000 Harvard/Radcliffe alumni live within 75 miles of Boston. Additional details about the depth and breadth of Harvard’s impact on the Massachusetts economy can be found in the annual Facts & Impact report.

Harvard's focus on research and innovation means that the University will help power the Massachusetts economy long into the future. Between 2011 and 2013, a combined $9.58 billion in research grants and early-stage corporate financing was awarded to Harvard and companies connected to it. This money is an investment in Massachusetts’ future. The research dollars awarded to Harvard will fund discoveries that make tomorrow’s innovations possible. And investment in young and promising Massachusetts companies means that a homegrown corporate sector will help fuel the Commonwealth for another generation. Visit the Ecosystem of Innovation webpage for more information about Harvard’s connection to young Massachusetts biotech companies.
