Increasing Affordable Housing

In the post rent control era, Boston and Cambridge have seen housing costs skyrocket while federal and state resources have declined, threatening diversity and the vitality of city neighborhoods. Developed in consultation with local leaders, 20/20/2000 is Harvard's $20 million affordable housing initiative through which the University provides $10 million in low-interest loans to each Cambridge and Boston to increase and preserve affordable housing. 20/20/2000 was created to generate and preserve affordable housing for low and middle-income residents. Thus far, these funds have helped create 2,100 units of affordable housing. As part of 20/20/2000, an additional $1 million in grants have been distributed to nonprofit agencies to support innovation in housing policy through the Harvard Housing and Innovation Program. The Cambridge Affordable Housing Trust, the Local Initiatives Support Corporation and Boston Community Capital are the three intermediaries that make the loan funds available.
