About this Site

Methodology

Information about Harvard University’s connection to Massachusetts venture-backed companies is based on an analysis of venture capital investment data purchased from CB Insights, and on information obtained from publicly available websites. All connections between Harvard and the funded companies, and Harvard and venture capital firms, reflect the point in time when the connections were mapped.

Two types of “connections” are highlighted on this site: connections to Harvard University and connections to the affiliated teaching hospitals. A connection to Harvard is defined as a faculty member, staff member, alumnus, or student who holds a management or advisory role at a venture capital firm or funded company. For a connection to an affiliated teaching hospital to exist, three relationships must be present – an individual must be a member of the Harvard community, must hold a management or advisory role at a venture capital firm or funded company, and must have an appointment at an affiliated teaching hospital.

Beyond the Biotech Sector

The industries highlighted in this section have been selected based on CB Insights’ classification of funded companies. The following chart provides yearly data on the number of venture-funded companies that can be linked to Harvard, followed by the total number of companies that received funding.

Ecosystem at Work (2011-2015)

Between 2011 and 2015, 95 Massachusetts biotech companies with a connection to Harvard received venture capital funding. These companies received 94.3 percent – a total of $3.3B – of all biotech venture capital fund awarded to Massachusetts companies. Among the companies that received venture capital awards are established companies with products in the late stages of clinical trials and young companies still testing the commercial viability of an idea.

If a company is missing from the list below that you believe should be included, please email community@harvard.edu and a member of the project team will be in touch.
